PET NAME by Udokwe Precious

Pet name is the nickname specially used between spouses instead of their name, it is peculiar to them alone and a third party is not allowed to use it in addressing either of the spouses. Such names are sweetheart, boo, baby, sexy, ayomi, ifemi.

It amazes me that some spouses still call one another by their first name and some even use the name of the first child as in the case of a man calling his wife “ayo’s mum”. Some also use it only when in private but when in public or in the presence of a third person they address each other with the first name. This to me means the “intimacy” of that relationship needs to be questioned.

The importance of pet name is the sweetness it adds to your relationship both privately and publicly. It allows free flow of teasing and fun and cuts off any form of formality, and the couples will appreciate each other through the sweet atmosphere the pet name creates. Imagine how impossible it would be for a man that calls his spouse sweetheart to insult her by saying “sweetheart you are stupid” and how possible it is for a man that calls his spouse by name to say “Precious you are stupid” ( laughing).

Let your spouse know how much you love and appreciate them by calling them what you feel they truly are to you. Make them feel special by calling them a name different from what everybody calls them. For example a lady that calls her spouse “heart throb” once told me the love her spouse showers on her makes her feel breathless. As much as this is an exaggeration, it feels real to them.

My pet name is (?) hahahaha……! I got you there but I will tell you if you promise to do same after reading this article.
