DISTRIBUTION OF COUGH SYRUP CONTAINING CODEINE SUSPENDED BY EMZOR

An investigated report by BBC Africa recently exposed the problem of codeine addiction among Nigerian youths and how drug dealers appear complicit in an inhumane, illegal sale and distribution that fuels the addiction.

In the documentary, a sales representative of Emzor Pharmaceuticals was recorded illegally selling codeine to the BBC's undercover reporters and boasting about how the drugs that he was supplying them were "freshly baked...straight from the oven". Thinking he was dealing with illegal drug dealers, he said: "This is a product I know that if I have 1 million cartoons. I can sell it in a week.

Emzor has issued an official statement explaining its role in the production and distribution of codeine in Nigeria. The pharmaceutical company also said that the "Sales Rep depicted in the BBC video was initially placed on suspension and has now been summarily dismissed following an investigation.
